Day 20: Saturday January 27, 2024

Written by Pastor Bob

Take a moment to pause, be still, and prepare your heart and mind to receive God’s word.

READ: Exodus 33:12-23

People tend to be impressed by the way that God revealed his glorious presence to Moses (even if it was only his backside), often desiring to have such an experience themselves. It strikes me as interesting though to note just what sort of relationship Moses already had with God, how he would go and meet with Moses, and speak to him “face to face, as one speaks to a friend” (Exodus 33v11).

It would seem that God was not being asked to convince or persuade Moses of the relationship that they had, but rather Moses was asking for a deepening of the relationship. For God to build on, or expand what was already there. Moses already regularly met with God, and they had a more intimate relationship than any other person in Israel (Deuteronomy 34v10).

It can be intimidating to read accounts such as these where Moses’ face had to be shielded from God’s glory, lest he die. Understandably, we find ourselves questioning how we could ever grow in a depth of relationship with a holy God in light of our current state and tendencies towards sinfulness. But, there is hope! Moses asked, and God responded to this request. What is put on display here in God revealing his glorious presence to Moses, is his desire to draw into a closer relationship with his creation.

Are there aspects of “coming before God ” that seem intimidating to you? Do you believe that God over all of creation desires to have a close and intimate relationship with
you? How might such a belief affect the way that you pray, or talk with God? How might you prepare, or position yourself to respond to the invitation from God to grow in a deeper relationship with him moving forward?

Ask God to reveal himself in such a way that your relationship with him would be deepened. Ask the Lord to strengthen and encourage your heart to overcome any fears that may be keeping you from experiencing a deeper relationship with him.

Take a moment to reflect on times where you believe that God may have been inviting you personally into a deeper relationship with him. What did you think, or feel about that invitation? How have, or might you end up responding? Share your thoughts and reflections around the table.
