Day 10: Wednesday, January 17, 2024

Written by Pastor Adam

Take a moment to pause, be still, and prepare your heart and mind to receive God’s word.

READ: Hebrews 9:24-28

One of the things that my wife and I love doing together is to watch movies. My favorite type of movie is the one where you have no clue what is going on until about five minutes from the end of it. Then, one piece of information seems to bring light to the entire narrative. Every scene and every interaction begins to make sense in light of one detail.

This is sort of what the author of Hebrews is doing for the readers throughout the whole letter. The author is drawing on occurrences or themes from the Old Testament to paint a picture of how Jesus is the fulfillment of the entire narrative arc of Scripture. He writes that Christ has appeared in the Holy Place to do away with sin with one final sacrifice. Christ is the high priest who has stood before God and offered the ultimate sacrifice of Himself to take away the sins of all.

Imagine the original readers reading this letter feeling awe for what Jesus has done, maybe even saying, “Woah, it all makes sense.” They are given an opportunity to see the Old Testament traditions and practices they are so familiar with through the lens of the person of Jesus. Jesus has brought new life and shown that He is the answer to thousands of years of traditions that, because of Him, are now brought to a new light.

What is your relationship to the Old Testament? Do you see it as an integral part of God’s redemptive plan?

Thank you for the way that you have brought us redemption and displayed your love for us.

What is your favorite Old Testament story?
