Day 1: Monday, January 8, 2024

Written by Pastor Amy

Take a moment to pause, be still, and prepare your heart and mind to receive God’s word.

READ: Luke 18:1-8

I have always been intrigued by this parable that Jesus told. A widow, a woman, who in biblical times would have been marginalized, peripheral in power or distinction– and yet she had the courage and persistence to contend for help against the injustice inflicted upon her.

That alone stands out. Through her story, Jesus is reminding his disciples (and us!) to never give up. To meet the challenges of life with persistent prayer, grit and resilience– and to not lose heart! Continuing to pray even amidst the daily weariness of the yet unanswered.

But look closer. Beyond highlighting in the parable what the widow does, even more significant–

Jesus highlights what God does. He sees her. He responds to her. Her story reveals God’s faithful character. A powerful reminder and promise that God sees and hears us and will not leave our heart cries unanswered.

REFLECT:

  • Where do you need to be reminded that God sees and hears you? Has your weariness or unbelief hindered your ability to hear him speak to you or believe his promises?
  • Or perhaps has kept you from experiencing his presence amidst the pain?
  • Ask yourself, “Am I attached to an outcome or anchored in the character and goodness of God?”

PRAY:
May I be found faithful to have never given up praying when Jesus returns. For my posture to reveal a believing and trusting heart, while yet surrendering to the mystery of God’s sovereignty. My part– PRAY. God’s part– revealing his character, faithfulness and presence.

FAMILY MOMENT:
Identify where you may have become weary in praying. Go around the table (or meet a friend for coffee) to encourage and take a renewed stand alongside one another to faithfully seek and trust God as you pray.
